One of my favourite parts of every new project is the briefing meeting.
It's where we talk about your lifestyle, your routines, what frustrates you about your current home, and of course...
Your wishlist.
Almost every client comes prepared with a list of "must-haves."
In a kitchen, it usually sounds something like this:
Integrated bins
Soft-close drawers
LED strip lighting
Hidden appliance storage
Finger-pull cabinetry
Power points inside cupboards
And every time, I smile because...
Most of those aren't really "extras" anymore.
They're simply the starting point.
Today's Luxury Is Tomorrow's Standard
The world of interior design moves incredibly fast.
What felt innovative ten years ago has become an expectation today.
Integrated bins?
Absolutely.
LED lighting beneath overhead cabinetry?
Of course.
Custom drawers for cutlery and utensils?
Standard.
Concealed rangehoods?
Finger-pull cabinetry?
Appliance garages?
They're all solutions we now incorporate into many of our kitchens because they simply make everyday life easier.
The conversation shouldn't stop there.
That's where the real design begins.
It's the Details You Don't Know to Ask For
One of the biggest advantages of working with an interior designer is discovering solutions you never knew existed.
Because unless you've spent years visiting kitchen suppliers, attending product launches, walking through international furniture fairs and spending countless hours inside showrooms, how would you know what's available?
And honestly...
You're not expected to.
That's our job.
Every year we continue learning about new products, new hardware, smarter storage systems and clever manufacturing solutions that make homes function better.
Many of these aren't advertised on Pinterest.
They're discovered through conversations with suppliers, cabinet makers, manufacturers and product specialists.
Every Kitchen Should Be Designed Around the People Using It
Take one of our recent apartment projects, for example.
At first glance, the brief sounded familiar.
The clients wanted integrated bins, hidden storage for small appliances, seamless finger pulls and under-cabinet lighting.
A great starting point.
But once we looked at how they actually lived, the design became far more personalised.
Where do they prepare coffee every morning?
Which appliances stay permanently on the benchtop?
How often do they entertain?
What needs to be accessible every day?
What should disappear completely?
How much pantry storage do they actually need?
Those questions shape a kitchen far more than a wishlist ever could.
The result wasn't simply a beautiful kitchen.
It became a kitchen that worked specifically for them.
Every Home Is Different
The best storage solution for one family might be completely unnecessary for another.
Some households need dedicated storage for baking appliances.
Others prioritise recycling systems.
Some clients love open shelving.
Others want absolutely everything hidden.
The available space also plays a huge role.
Sometimes the structure of the building, plumbing locations or existing walls influence what's possible.
And, of course, every project has a different budget.
Interior design isn't about choosing every available feature.
It's about knowing which ones will make the biggest difference for your lifestyle and investing where it matters most.
It Doesn't Stop at the Kitchen
Exactly the same thinking applies throughout the rest of your home.
Bathrooms now offer incredibly clever storage systems, concealed shaving cabinets, integrated lighting, heated mirrors and beautifully organised vanity drawers.
Walk-in robes can be customised with jewellery drawers, pull-down hanging rails, integrated lighting, shoe storage, hidden laundry hampers and countless other organisational solutions.
The possibilities are almost endless.
The challenge isn't finding inspiration.
It's knowing what's actually available, what works together, and what makes sense for your home.
Experience Saves More Than Time
One of the biggest investments you make when hiring an interior designer isn't simply paying for creativity.
You're benefiting from years of accumulated knowledge.
Years spent visiting suppliers.
Exploring showrooms.
Attending exhibitions.
Learning about new materials.
Understanding manufacturing capabilities.
Building relationships with trusted suppliers.
Keeping up with products long before they appear on social media.
Could you research all of this yourself?
Of course.
But what might take a designer a few minutes to recommend could take weeks—or even months—of researching, comparing and second-guessing on your own.
